In a first for Australia, a Matsing 24-port, 3-beam lens antenna has been trialled by a major network operator at the Flemington Racecourse during the Melbourne Cup.
The antenna was deployed on a COW (Cell-on-Wheels) to help carry the expected high traffic load throughout the event.
During the trial period, the antenna’s three dual-polarised, wideband beams carried traffic over multiple sub-bands in the 1710-2690MHz mobile wireless band for both 3G and 4G LTE, covering the well publicised “Birdcage” celebrity area and adjacent track.
Highlighting the continuing trend for data growth, the three major carriers (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone) reported over 50% more data throughput during this year’s Melbourne Cup than at last year’s event.
Matsing lens antennas are an attractive solution for these network operators in this scenario, enabling their networks to handle traffic increases such as this without having to add new cell sites.
